In our class, ten and eleven years old students were studying a unit on "Native Americans" for four weeks. They learned about the Native Americans' way of life, their cultures, and their homes in different regions.
On Tuesday, November 10, 2009, Caryn's class, Mark's class, and Mary D.'s class, went on a field trip to Garvies Point Museum in Glen Cove, NY. There was a lecture given along with the demonstration of artifacts.
The students were given the opportunity to touch and experience the use of the artifacts that were used for corn grinding, sharpening rocks to make spear tips, making fire with wood and rock, leather moccasins from buffalo and deer, and drilling a hole in the wood.
After lunch, we toured around the museum to see different things Indians used in order to survive. The students got to go inside a real wigwam and sit inside a wooden canoe carved from a huge trunk of a tree. We went for a walk outdoors by the bay and explored the land.
