 POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

 Executive Director

Cleary School for the Deaf is a suburban, private, NY State-supported program that has served the Deaf community on Long Island since 1925. Cleary serves 65-70 children who are deaf from birth to 21 years of age in infant, pre-school, elementary and secondary school programs.

The Executive Director of Cleary School for the Deaf is expected to exhibit the following characteristics, abilities and skills. The Board of Trustees invites candidates who present with these qualities to apply for this position by June 15, 2013 or until filled.

  • Is a leader able to establish a clear direction and tone for Cleary School and nurture a progressive and collegial school environment
  • Is a visionary and an evaluator who continually strives for school improvement
  • Understands how children learn best
  • Knows the best instructional practices for children
  • Insures that approved school curriculum meets state standards and is implemented throughout the school program
  • Creates an environment and programs conducive to staff development and professional growth
  • Is a good manager who is able to direct administration to accomplish school goals
  • Is skilled in hiring, developing, evaluating and retaining quality staff
  • Writes and speaks well and communicates effectively with members of the Cleary community
  • Is able to build strong relationships with the local community, legislators, school districts and media
  • Interprets legislative efforts into affirmative action plans for staff, parent/guardians and Board of Trustees
  • Administers the policies of Cleary School’s Employee Handbook fairly and consistently and updates as needed
  • Knows education and labor laws and policies that pertain to the Cleary community and insures all are articulated, implemented and adhered to appropriately
  • Develops and monitors a healthy operational budget and adjusts as needed
  • Provides a safe and secure school environment including insuring the integrity and proper maintenance of school buildings and property
  • Designs an effective outreach program to encourage growth in student enrollment
  • Is flexible, organized and exhibits strong personal and professional integrity

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An earned Master’s Degree, or higher, in Education
  • New York State Certification in Administration or ability to obtain
  • Five (5) or more years of successful experience in teaching and/or educational administration
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board of Trustees deems appropriate and acceptable

 Additional Information:

  • The Executive Director position is a 12 month position
  • Salary is competitive and dependent on education and experience
  • Start date is on or about September 1, 2013
